United We Stand…On the Workers
To me, this is exactly, in one regard, what is wrong with our country right now. United Airlines declared bankruptcy three years ago. It never stopped operating, however it has managed to diminish its workforce by 30% and its airplanes by 20%, and turn pensions over to the government. So, those employees that managed to keep their jobs have a 30% reduction in pay and are working longer hours. One pilot with a 29 year history with the company is realizing 25% of his pension, and his stocks – all United - are worthless.
Then we have the management side. 400 managers are getting 100 million in newly issued stock options, worth plenty, with the CEO receiving 15 MILLION dollars.
How does this work? Do you see how I can apply this to the country? Can you see how this can get not just a little old? The old standby of “we have to attract the best and the brightest and keep them here” with these monster golden parachutes which, let’s be real here for just one second, are golden showers on the workers. You cannot run these businesses without the workers. I think the transportation workers in NYC proved that. What were they called by the mayor? Selfish? Oooook. The problem is, when you bring the standard of living so far down for so many people, when you make their job security non-existent and their healthcare questionable, you preoccupy them with their daily lives, they do not look up to see what is going on that is deeply affecting their communities and society. When you are treading water with a heavy burden on your back and loved ones in your arms, you do not focus in on the purity of the water or cleanliness of the air you are breathing. You focus on surviving. Too many people are in survival mode. The citizens of this country are desperately trying to stay afloat and the captain of the yacht filled with his powerful, wealthy, partying buddies is flying by waving with a dumbass grin on his face creating more waves. Where the heck is the coast guard?
