Closedmind Mountain
Ok. How freakin’ pathetic is it that I cannot find a theatre near me playing one of the most critically acclaimed films and performances this season? Why do I have to drive half an hour when I have six theatres within ten minutes of my home? Could it possibly be that (shock horror) the content is just too racy? I mean, Brokeback Mountain, is about the last true American frontier, the true adventurer’s wilderness. The homosexual cowboy. Yee-freakin’-haw, y’all! Can life get any more ironic? It’s enough to make tears form in the corner of my eyes, a film about the tender love story between two cowboys, right before Rodeo Days, the yearly ritual of torturing animals for entertainment! Now I understand the bunkhouses, the trail rides, The Ponderosa’s affinity for just the most delightfully handsome men with robust manliness and divine tresses. I haven’t seen it because it’s under “limited release” because the friggin’ condemnation police are in full effect and God forbid that we open a dialogue about homosexuality. We might even delve into how shameful it is that those amongst us actually agree to this assault on a segment of our society. Why is it something we want to do, as Christians? That is, condemn someone? Disapprove? Is that your job, now? Judge? Because we seem to keep over complicating things by getting involved in something we know so little about.
Pull your nose out of your bible for two seconds and understand this. Everyone knows this kind of person. The kind of person that might have a tremendous gift, who contributes in that area to the greater good. But this person has a very annoying habit of interjecting his or her opinion, insights, vibes, thoughts, contemplations, dreams or otherwise where she or he has absolutely no expertise or experience. You know this kind of person. A non-parent telling you how to raise your children, for example. Now, you know this person! That person is you to God when you keep throwing out your opinions and judgments in regards to other people. It just makes you look really bad. There’s no reason for it.
I truly believe that homosexuality is something that is burned into your physiological and chemical makeup before you are born. I believe that there is a fraction of a fraction of the gay community that have chosen to be gay. I think that quite a few heterosexuals have experimented with homosexuality. I know that I did in my mind, but never felt compelled to go any further. It was not my proverbial bag. I always felt incredibly flattered when a lesbian showed an interest, though. There’s something so amazing about members of both sexes finding you attractive. I just find that to be cool.
Anyway, I believe that the greater portion of Fundamentalist Christians who are stuck on this “gay is choice” thing, is that then they will have to believe that God made a mistake or the bible made a mistake. Frankly, I opt for the latter. People are fallible, guys. We all know that. That’s why forgiveness is mentioned so often. Because we screw up so often. And we all know that history is preserved by the winners, and the winners want to look good. So history is sketchy to say the least.
The point I am trying to make here is simple. Swaggering is not mentioned, in a positive way, in the bible. Humble is. We are not behaving humbly right now. Not at all. God gave us a book. It’s a great book. I love the book. I love the fact that people care so much about the book that they study and fawn over it with the adoration I believe it deserves. But I think a huge part of capturing the man that was the savior, Jesus Christ, on paper is to continue his teachings in action every day in the physical and concrete form. We do not need to judge people. We need to bring them in and show them that the creator of the universe loves each one as his own. That’s so incredibly awesome, really. And that’s it. That’s our job. We have a hard enough time trying to forage our way through our own lives. Getting involved in others’ lives, especially in a negative way, is so counterproductive. This obstacle. This hindrance to equality is embarrassing. We need to get over ourselves, come down from the pedestal and realize that people are people are people. We all have issues. We all have hang ups. We all have baggage. We all have God given gifts. We all have the capacity to do so much good stuff. Let’s go tell it on the brokeback mountain that we are ready to start emulating the guy we quote so often. And bring the movie to my area for crying out loud!
