Current Event Musings
I suppose if it hadn’t had such an incredibly profound effect on the nation, I would be feeling sorry for the Republican Party right now. Grasping at anything that resembles a life preserver, the likes of hannity and slush squeal like stuck pigs about when “they” knew about the foley ims and emails. Turns out, the republican leadership knew about it too, a long time ago.
“Dirty tricks!” they seethe.
And I think “got it from your own play book.”
Yesterday mush was talking about how the repubs need to get back on message. That the libs (who have no standards) love it when the people with standards fail.
Huh.
Interesting.
Let’s see if I got this right.
You guys put Clinton on the rack for how long over Monica, a consenting, OF AGE female?
You pursued and pursued until you could completely humiliate him.
Now a guy who was on a committee for missing and exploited children, a republican is caught sending really foul IMs to an UNDERAGE boy, and WE have no standards?
Interesting.
The leadership tries to cover it up (shock horror wasn’t expecting that) and gets busted by someone in his own party, and we are the ones that are going after YOU?
Yes.
There is a clear message here.
Absolute power corrupts.
Like the power we just put into the hands of the most incompetent person ever to hold the presidency, in the form of the detainee torture bill. Call it what you like but when we get rid of Habeas Corpus, we are entering into the dark realm of a police state. You can paint with the broad stroke that these “terrorists” want to kill us, but IF these people are terrorists, what’s the hold up?
Seriously.
You have the intel, you have the facts that prove this guy is a menace, a problem, an insurgent, go!
Get thee to a court of law!
Try the bastard!
Sentence him!
Show the world what we do to people that plot and attempt to kill innocent civilians.
But that’s not the case.
The problem is, we don’t have any evidence of any kind for any but the 14 prisoners taken to Gitmo from A SECRET PRISON THAT DOESN’T EXIST. We swept up a bunch of people while terrified of missing someone (because, we kind of missed Osama – didn’t want to do that again!), and with a big, fat net hauled in anyone and everyone we could find that might possibly have known someone that babysat for a relative of someone related to Osama.
Five years some of these people have languished in jail.
Can you imagine?
Can you imagine your loved one not showing up and finding out indirectly that he was picked up?
I cannot even grasp the terror involved in that.
It’s like a legal kidnapping…without the legal part.
Because it’s not some derelict creep that wants a ransom, it’s a government that sees anyone with dark skin, that practices a different religion, who went to Pakistan within the past fifteen years as a threat.
Can you imagine the families?
Every second of every day wondering.
Just wondering what is happening to that family member right now?
I wouldn’t be able to sleep.
Eat.
Concentrate.
I cannot comprehend what I would do if my husband or sons were picked up.
No amount of evidence would matter.
You are up against a machine.
A machine that can contain people indefinitely, that re-writes and amends laws to suit its desires.
No standards?
Isn’t that weird?
All along I thought I was a highly principled person. Loyal to my family, strong work ethic, teaching my children that stealing and cheating of any kind is wrong. Teaching my boys respect for women and authority. Implanting a firm faith in God, leading church youth groups, volunteering in my community. Centering my life around compassion.
But rush says I have no standards.
And according to him, he is the be all and end all in journalistic integrity, don’t ya know?
All these people who work diligently to end the war – to stop the bloodshed on both sides, to bring our kids back. The people that want to invest in our kids, our society, who want a respected image in the global community.
Standardless.
Without standards.
There is usually a philosophical break for people like this. I have seen individuals, as if hitting a brick wall or having ice water thrown in their face, suddenly realize that, you know what?
Turn around is fair play.
And although I don’t like the idea of being reflective of the republicans, I do realize that in order to win, it is imperative that we put our collective nose to the grindstone and do what needs to be done. Not letting the response to a claim drown out the reality.
This Foley thing is bad. I have read the IMs and they make me sick. My son is 15. I cannot imagine anyone defending someone making the references he did.
Alcohol?
Hmmm.
He said it himself the best – those that prey on children have a serious mental illness, they need help…but they don’t need to be in any kind of contact with children.
But didn’t he grab hold of any group he could as he circled the drain?

He wants everyone to know – that he’s gay.
Thus allowing the erroneous stereotype of gay men = child predator to burst back into the conservative frame of reference. There’s a clown named pat gray on hate radio this morning. That statement by foley led to an open season on gay bashing. Pathetic. Look up the facts. Gay men are not the predators. Screwed up hetros are the purveyors of the vast majority of crimes against children. Succumbing to stereotypes and mass generalizations is weak and lazy.
One of the biggest problems that republicans on the hill are having is standing up and declaring in their most persuasive and emphatic tone – total denial.
Oh dear.
It seems to be the season of denials and then documentation that completely counters the statement emerges within moments of the copy going public.
I don’t think there is one amongst us that is without sin. But we expect our children to step up and be honest, be forthcoming, OWN their mistakes, take responsibility. Yet time and time again they are met with the adult leadership setting the examples of denial, dodge, duck and weave….and then point at the little sister (or subordinates).
Why do we hold our children to such high esteem when all around them are adults getting away with considerably more destructive behaviors, more loathsome plagiarism, more cruel intentions.
Is it because there is still hope in the young?
The hope that we can still get a generation to go down the path of righteousness, regardless of the fact that it is woefully overgrown, seriously unkempt, and frightening dark and lonely?

Where are the examples?
Where are the true leaders in this country?
Where are the people that cannot, will not be corrupted by their position?
By their power?
Republican leadership says they just heard about these messages on Friday.
Republicans come out and say, actually, no, you were told about this months ago.
Rice categorically denied being told of Osama being an imminent threat.
Tenet produces memos from the meeting contradicting that claim.
Rice staunchly rejects that a plan was given by the Clinton administration regarding, I believe, Afghanistan.
Paperwork is produced to call her out as a liar.
Document after document is produced that shows the war in Iraq, hell, the war of terror is an alarming mess.
Out comes the dirge. Stay the course. With us or with them. Aiding and abetting. Terrorists are listening.
Doh!
It’s embarrassing. How do you recover from this? After being the Star party that hotly pursued Clinton on this whole call to decency, to character, to integrity.
And you get caught not only with your hand in every conceivable cookie jar, but also with your pants down on the computer with a high school boy.
I am not going to say that the dem party is the party of high moral standards. The parties, all of them, are made up of people. People who screw up so royally that you wonder what they were thinking.
What were you THINKING?
And what the heck is this fixation on the source? On the methods that this information was garnered?
Say what?
Is that crazy?
Is it just nuts that those in hate radio freak out about leaks and how those leaks should be investigated? With our government in literal lockdown, this is the only way we can GET real information.
Sorry, but this is what happens when people who have a conscience cannot stand it anymore.
You tell me…if you continuously heard your boss lie to the investors, to the employees, to everyone about the health of a decision, what would you do? Would you have the inner fortitude to get that information out?
Don’t we all know what happens to anyone in the vicinity of this administration that looks like they might not be following in lockstep behind these guys? Jiminy Cricket – look at Richard Clark. Always faithful and loyal, regardless of which party was in the White House, he gives truthful insight into the situation re: terrorists, and he gets demoted. He was the only one that actually had the integrity to say at the 9/11 commission hearings – I could have done more, I screwed up, I’m sorry.
Wow.
What kind of man is that?
Look back through the chronological outline of events over the past few years. Intricate schemes to pocket taxpayer money, corporate greed stretching from Texas to Iraq, money laundering, incredible pork, dismal failures due to corporate/congressional/administrative corruption, continuous affronts to our civil rights, disinformation, purposeful misinformation.
The problem is – when you set these precedents, you better zip it when it comes time for the other side to take the lead.
You better sit on your hands and realize that for eight freakin’ years we had to put up with you people stealing, lying, stomping all over the people that put you in office, yukking it up while we raced around trying to pay our mortgages, gas for our cars, feed our children and try to stay healthy in an ever increasingly polluted world. When we inevitably take back control we will tell you one time and one time only - sit in that naughty corner, don’t you dare say a word, and think about WHAT YOU HAVE DONE.
