Daily Musing
I find it wholly terrifying that this country actually wants to consider some far-reaching, blanket doctrine that allows bush to determine the extent of how much a prisoner can be tortured. You know, these scenarios that keep getting thrown out mean nothing to me. What if it were people that had your son…still feel the same?
My principles are my principles, my values are my values. They do not change with the climate of the day. They do not change because of circumstance. My only retort to this ridiculousness is – what would we allow others to do to our own?
Waterboarding – would we be ok for someone to do this to one our soldiers? Hypothermia? My principle is directly linked to the bible – you know – that weapon that we keep bashing everyone over the head with? Do unto others. We have swept up tens of thousands – TENS OF THOUSANDS – of people, labeling them terrorists and doing inexplicable things to them under this all encompassing umbrella of protection known as the “war on terrorism” and “national security”. My question is – what if it were your mother, father, grandmother, sister, brother, daughter? The demonizing of an entire group of people has allowed us to dehumanize them, thus allowing behaviors we would never tolerate otherwise.
It petrifies me that our leader, the leader of the most powerful country in the world refuses to speak to other leaders. For as long as we don’t engage, we cannot understand and gross misconceptions and falsehoods can flourish. How preposterous is it that there was any conversation about not providing security to the leader of Iran? What is the message here? We don’t know you, we don’t care to know you, you are evil and you will be destroyed.
How do you pronounce your name again??
NBC did interviews with this guy. People were outraged that a news station would actually give this man a platform. What is going on? Have we learned nothing? Didn’t we go to war demonizing the enemy with falsehoods swirling in the wake of our rush to battle? What is wrong with hearing this man? Because his country supplied arms to Lebanon’s Hezbollah? We provided weapons, cluster bombs, to Israel. What’s the difference? He is enriching uranium? Do you have any concept of our nuclear arsenal? Have we been responsible with our weaponry? If memory serves…we are the only ones that have dropped not one but two of these devastating bombs. Is the sentiment that everyone needs to disarm…except us? Why? Why, when we are going around threatening everyone would anyone even consider disarming? Remember, not so long ago, we were moving towards global disarmament. Ah! How quickly things change!
I am tired of this.
I am tired of the us vs. them mentality.
I am tired of the same ole mistakes of rushing to judgment based on fear and hearsay. It is easy to castigate an entire group of people you don’t know, don’t recognize and don’t understand. We have a very long history of doing exactly that.
